Home Elliptical Machines

An elliptical trainer (often referred to as a cross-trainer or elliptical cross-trainer) is one of the hottest pieces of fitness equipment. Gone are the days of aching muscles and joints. Elliptical trainers were designed to give you an effective workout with minimal impact on the joints to provide an injury free workout.

Elliptical machines are often found in gyms, but have recently become affordable for home use. The current lineup of home elliptical machines are affordable and don't take up too much space in your home. They plug into standard household AC outlets are very quiet compared to treadmills.

Most people are too busy to go to a gym after a long day at work. With an at home unit you will be able to get the workout you need in less time than it would take to go to a gym. Elliptical cross trainers work your legs and arms to give you a workout that tones your arms and legs. As you burn calories, you will begin to see weight loss, muscle strength, and the pounds meld away.

My friend knew i was looking for one, this one was broken, needed the frame re-welded, someone really broke it somehow. Anyway, my husband fixed the frame, and put it back together. The computer works great gives a nice workout. But, I have to say the belt is noisy.

*****  Much better then the cheap Welso
by Stephen - Portland Oregon on November 10th, 2008
Have used the elliptical for almost a year (odometer just past 200) and have had little problems. It has remained quiet and holds up my 200 lbs 6'2" frame well. It doesn't shift like the cheap Welso machine did. Stride is a little short but I don't hit my knees like I did on the Welso either.

I have had a bad knee for over 10 years and the elliptical makes a great aerobic workout without impact on the knee.

Con: Power adapter is an additional $88. It goes through 4 D size batteries in about 3 months without using the fan.

I bought this elliptical at Wal-Mart for $400 and it is fantastic. I worked out on Precor & Sole & Nautilus and I have to say this one is just as good and has great features. The trainer feature is phenomenal and helps out tremendously. I would recommend this elliptical trainer for anyone beginner to advanced. Enjoy!

I snatched this machine up at Walmart--they sold me the floor model ( was up on a shelf, so it didn\'t have people climbing on it, brand new condition, for A HUNDRED DOLLARS. It is incredible----a lot of them clearanced, and marked down, must be a newer model coming in. Don\'t be afraid to ask the managers if the price marked is the best price they can give you---the clearance price was $149.00 and he came down another fifty on it. Awesome machine---cool features keep it interesting and exciting!

This is a great machine; I haven’t used it as much as I should. Prior owners should be aware there is a voluntary recall in effect with full replacement. I am sure current machines being sold are not affected but just a heads up.

Is excellent comparing for what you paid for. I have this machine for a year and a half and i don't have any problems at all. I only have one question. The display that shows distance is that is in miles, meters or kilometers? That's my only concern about this machine, I just workout by minutes.

by Molly on October 14th, 2007
I am writing this review to tell you this is one of the most compact and soothest Ellipticals on the market. I Love the fact that I can move it around the room and it doesn\'t have to be plugged in (4 AA batteries). I have used it for every day for an hour and the only critism I have is that as the batteries start to fade (I am still using the original ones) the resistance number has to go up to maintain my constant heart rate. The is a great buy for the $160 I paid for it.

by Heather on September 7th, 2007
I was a little skeptical considering the fact that I had not been able to try this machine out. I got it home and put it together and even workout on it in the same day that i put it together. I am 245 lbs and it says the max weight is 250 lbs but this doesn't buckle under my weight or anything no creaking or rocking or anything like other machines this price range for my weight. I have only had it for about 4 days now but I love it so far other not knowing exactly how many miles I have done on it.

I really hope others take a chance on this elliptical as I have and its a good workout at a great price.

*****  Incredible Value...Almost Perfect
by Joey A. on August 2nd, 2007
This elliptical trainer rivals many in the $2000 range...and I bought it for less than $400 at Wal-Mart. I travel about two weeks a month and, fortunately, I\'m able to stay at many hotels with excellent fitness facilities. Last year, my wife asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I told her I wanted an elliptical trainer...so she went online and started looking for the brands and models I preferred from the hotel fitness centers I had used. Basic models were upwards of $4000, and even ones that I considered pretty mediocre were in the $2000-$2500 range. So, I thought \"maybe next year\". One night we were at Wal-Mart looking for a bicycle helmet and I noticed that they had a couple elliptical machines on a platform in the department. I saw this one (the Image 9.5) for under $400 and began looking for some reason that it was so inexpensive. It looked like a good machine...though maybe not quite as substantial as the $4000 machines I was used to. I thought \"worst case scenario is that I get home, spend an hour assembling it, don\'t like it, and have to take it back for a refund\". However, long story short, that was NOT the case. The machine is great and there\'s nothing about it that is shoddy, unstable or uncomfortable. I have wondered many times since how a machine like this can be built and sold for such a low price. I am thoroughly satisfied with my purchase. Now I have no doubt this machine couldn\'t take the pounding of a professional application where it was being used five-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, but in my home fitness room where it\'s being used probably fifteen days a month for an hour a day, it\'s great. I\'ve had it almost a year now and it has performed flawlessly and shows no sign of wear-and-tear. It\'s really smooth and pretty quiet as well. There are quite a few different programs built-in and, though I\'ve never used them, I think there are some online options for using it along with instructional websites. There\'s only one thing about it I find less than the best...my wife is not an experienced elliptical user and has complained that even the lowest level of pedal resistance seems a bit too high for many out-of-shape beginners. So, if you\'re starting from scratch with your exercise regimen this may not be the machine for you. But for anyone at all physically fit or inclined, this is a great investment and a comfortable tool for taking your fitness to the next level.

Eclipse 1100HR Elliptical Machine
*****  Too short of stride
by Anonymous on June 19th, 2007
Pro: The unit is well constructed and offers a very smooth elliptical motion I have not found on other rear wheel units. I like the number of programs offered.

Con: The bottom rails for the feet pads did not fit in ‘U’ shaped wheels when it arrived. One side was off by a 1/8th of an inch and the other by about ˝ inch. This was due to the lower part of the handle-bars not being parallel to the main post. I had to use a 2x4 to bend out the bars and this put the rails in-line with the wheels. It is manufacturing flaw if you ask me.

This unit has a very short stride (15 inches) to the point where you feel uncomfortable. When exerting the pads you cannot lean forward naturally with out feeling you are over the display and handles are up against you. I remounted the feet pads back as far as possible in hope this would help. This did give a little more comfort but the stride is still short.

Because of the modifications and short stride, I cannot recommend this unit to anyone who is tall or likes the longer-stride.

*****  Great buy
by JBahn127 on May 2nd, 2007
I recently purchased this machine without being able to try it out first, thinking I would most likely return it. For the price I thought there would be no harm in trying it, plus it was nice and compact. It was fairly simple to put together and I was honestly shocked at how well-designed and sturdy it is and how great the 10 levels of digital resistance are - so much better than other models I tried out at this price range, which basically were flimsy and of little value. Plus, if you put it together right (including properly lubing the gears) it makes no noise other than the light swishing of the pedals. Also, the console is slightly different from the pictures shown online, it has the option to manually alter the resistance as well as use the two preprogrammed workouts. Bottom line - don't be fooled by the price; this is a quality machine. I'm really not very out of shape and it definitely gives me a great workout. If you just want a simple, well-made machine, why pay more?

Proform 20.0 Elliptical Machine
*****  Need power supply converter
by pmktogie on April 27th, 2007
We ordered the Proform 20.0 elliptical over the net and found that it takes D cell batteries vs. the AC/DC power supply that is an optional part. We have not been able to find out what the AC to DC Volt output (of a Class 2 transformer) and milAmp rating is from the manufacturer who wants over $60 to ship.....for an $800 machine, we think this is outrageous not to include the plug in wall transformer power supply.

Image 8.25 Elliptical Machine
*****  First Impressions
by J.C. on March 23rd, 2007
I just got the 8.25 from Wal Mart, the price is attractive for an entry level elliptical $295 with taxes and 2 yr extended warranty. Good packaging and good instructions, labeled fastner kit helps assembly. It appears to be a substantial machine with heavy double bushings at all moving joints, good continuous welds, and a good powder coat paint. The adjustable upper body hand bars is a nice feature, but not sure how well the plastic clamp mechanism will hold up over time. The machine worked correctly the first time, now time will tell about longevity. I think the bushing joints should be dissassembled once a year and repacked with grease, or at the very least have lithium grease shot into the bushings. The maintenance portion of the manual says nothing about future lube but I can see this as a problem for the future given that it is a bushing at wear points and not sealed ball bearings.

I only weigh 136 lbs and the flex bar broke after only 4 months. It only had a 3 month warranty (pretty slack) considering most things have 1 year. Anyway the manufacturer tried to charge me $100 for a new flex bar. The whole thing only costs $330. Flex Bar is the very small piece the pedal attaches to. Don\'t buy this Image 8.5

Horizon PSE7 Elliptical Machine
*****  VERY good, smooth. Small problems.
by Dave on March 22nd, 2007
Compliments:
When I stepped on this machine at Dick’s Sporting Goods, it was far superior in its smoothness and integrity when I compared it to other Horizon models. It was even smoother than the Sole E25. (Although the Sole was less expensive and had a nice display.) Your assembly instructions are amazing and the prepackaged parts that were labeled according to the appropriate installation steps were very helpful. I commented to my wife that I could tell that this would be a quality machine based on the assembly. I have had a few people try this at my house and two of them commented that this machine was smoother than their elliptical at their gym. I recently tried a high-end elliptical in the weight room of a hotel recently and liked the ride of this PSE7 much better than the one in the hotel.

After using this PSE7 for just three times, I am already impressed by that smooth ride quality and respectable stride length. This machine is strong and smooth - most customers would appreciate that. I certainly do. I thoroughly appreciate the low “Q factor.” The low Q factor was a driving force behind my purchase.

Random point: I over-tightened a screw and broke a piece of plastic. I then called the company and the replacement piece was in the mail that day. Customer service was helpful and courteous.

Suggestions:
1. My feet slide a bit to the sides during my workout and render the low Q factor less effective. If your feet pads were more like the sharp, clear plastic “stomp pads” on snowboards, then feet would not slide much in any direction.
2. Provide better instructions on using eTrack and Custom programming.
3. Create a message board/discussion forum for the PSE7 on your website much like Apple does with the iPod. People can share ideas and you might even tap into that forum for excellent, reliable customer feedback.
4. My wife is a 5’4” and has a hard time reaching the hand grips. You should provide a second set of hand grips so that many customers would be comfortable on your machine. In fact, the next model should have the grips closer together.

Complaints:
1. The heart rate monitor takes far TOO long to adjust to my actual heart rate to be useful. Sometimes I have to grip the electrodes for over a minute to get an accurate reading. (I know that I am gripping them properly.) The heart rate seems to have a default immediate reading in the 70s and then it takes a few seconds to move up one beat. If my heart rate were 145, this would take MINUTES to get to the correct reading.
2. I was doing the “interval program” on level 9 for 31 minutes and the speed was jumping at increments that were too far apart. This was very frustrating. The jumps in speed were exactly 4.7, 5.5, 6.3 and 7.1. I know that I was traveling at speeds between these, yet the speedometer would jump at larger increments. During my cool down, I finally saw different numbers. This was so frustrating that I was actually distracted from my workout. Now, I ignore speed. This machine that I loved so much was showing some imperfections. I noticed also that when the resistance changed, my speed on the display changed even though in reality, my speed did not change at all. The explanation I received from Horizon was that the ride is similar to the gearing on a bike and when you move to more difficult gears, you go faster. That is an absurd bit of logic since ellipticals are supposed to mimic running, NOT biking. If ellipticals were supposed to mimic biking, than why would Horizon try to achieve a low “Q factor?” Bikes do not have low Q factors.

This ride is unbelievable however, and the integrity far outweighs these other issues. Therefore, I would still give this a high rating. I never looked forward to running, but I look forward to my 35 minutes on this elliptical. I use the elliptical almost every night simply because I enjoy it. My wife has never exercised much and she loves using the machine as well. I would give it a perfect rating if Horizon addressed the concerns properly.
